Datz Museum of Art Resonant Voices exhibition featured two photographers from the United States who had recently published books with Datz Press — Jane Baldwin's Only the River Remains | Kara Women Speak (2004-present) and Lonnie Graham's A Conversation with the World (1987-present). The exhibition was accompanied by the release of limited-edition books by each artist.

The two projects focus on the same story: the lives of these people struggling are no different from our own lives. The central message was that we are all struggling to preserve our world and culture. For this reason, we must sincerely listen to each other’s voices.

Only the River Remains l Kara Women Speak, by Datz Press, is a limited-edition book that captures Baldwin’s deep immersion into the lives of these women and their discussions about the role of women, culture, human rights, and the environmental issues facing the Omo River Valley in Ethiopia and the Lake Turkana watershed in Kenya. Baldwin empowers the voices of Kara women, records the dignity of their lives, and shares how they have maintained and developed their culture under challenging circumstances.

Text from Datz Museum of Art’s website, exhibition catalog and press release.

Datz Team’s sensitive approach during the book’s development and their dedication to authentically and respectfully showcase the women’s stories was evident throughout the entire process, ensuring the women’s voices were represented with care and integrity.
Jane Baldwin

Working behind a medium format Hasselblad, the relationship between the artist and subject is unbroken, forming a cross-cultural bridge of human understanding. The direct gaze of each woman exhibits a transparency of spirit, both vulnerable and of tremendous strength.
